Insights from the NATO–Ukraine Defence Procurement Innovation & Industry Event on how AI, operational learning and sovereign AI are helping defence organisations strengthen readiness and long-term capability.

As defence organisations adapt to increasingly complex operational environments, the ability to learn faster may become just as important as the ability to respond faster.

This was one of the strongest themes to emerge from the recent NATO–Ukraine Defence Procurement Innovation & Industry Event, hosted by the Joint Analysis, Training and Education Centre (JATEC) at NATO Support and Procurement Agency (NSPA) Headquarters in Luxembourg.

Whitespace was selected as one of just 23 organisations from more than 100 applicants to participate, joining defence, government and industry leaders to explore how innovation can strengthen operational effectiveness, resilience and capability development.

Representing Whitespace, European Business Development Director Monika Mears presented our Operational Learning capability and discussed how AI can help organisations capture, analyse and disseminate lessons at speed and scale.

The conversations reinforced a growing reality across defence.

Learning is no longer something that happens after an operation.

It is becoming a continuous operational capability.

From Lessons Identified to Lessons Applied

Every exercise, deployment and operation generates valuable experience.

Yet across many organisations, lessons remain trapped in reports, disconnected systems or individual expertise, making them difficult to access when they are needed most.

As operational tempos increase and workforces become more distributed, the challenge is no longer simply recording lessons learned. It is ensuring those lessons are accessible, reusable and capable of informing future decisions.

This is where AI has the potential to transform how organisations build and retain operational knowledge.

Accelerating Operational Readiness Through AI

Artificial intelligence is often discussed in terms of automation or productivity.

Increasingly, however, defence organisations are exploring how AI can strengthen operational readiness by helping people learn more effectively.

By rapidly identifying emerging themes, connecting related experiences and surfacing relevant knowledge at the point of need, AI enables organisations to shorten the gap between experience and action.

Rather than replacing human expertise, AI strengthens it by ensuring valuable operational knowledge is never out of reach.

Building Capabilities That Improve Over Time

At Whitespace, this thinking underpins our approach to sovereign AI.

Through Collective, our sovereign AI operating system, and Solutions Engineering, our proven adoption model, organisations can rapidly develop AI capabilities that continuously evolve alongside operational needs.

Operational Learning is one example of this approach in practice, helping organisations capture institutional knowledge, preserve operational context and make experience reusable across teams, programmes and future missions.

As more organisations explore AI adoption, the ability to continuously improve—not simply deploy technology—will become an increasingly important differentiator.

Collaboration Drives Innovation

The event also demonstrated the value of collaboration across NATO, Ukraine and industry.

Bringing together operational users, procurement organisations and technology providers creates opportunities to share experience, accelerate innovation and ensure emerging capabilities are grounded in real operational challenges.

For Whitespace, it was an opportunity to contribute to important discussions on the future of defence innovation while learning from organisations facing some of the most demanding operational environments in the world.

Looking Ahead

The future of defence will not be defined solely by new technologies.

It will be shaped by how effectively organisations capture experience, retain knowledge and continuously improve operational capability.

The organisations that can learn faster, adapt faster and apply knowledge more effectively will be better positioned to respond to future challenges with confidence.

Events such as the NATO–Ukraine Defence Procurement Innovation & Industry Event demonstrate that this conversation is already underway—and that operational learning is becoming a strategic capability for modern defence.
